Prelim Film Evaluation

For our prelim task we were asked to create an opening to a film. To carry out the task I chose to work with Josh, I felt that only having two people working on the project would a good amount as if you had only one person on the task it may to bigger work load on your shoulders and if you and four/five people working together then communication lack and the task not carried out to the best of the participants ability. Therefore I decided to work in a group of two, This is so that I could have a large input on what would happen within the task but also the work load would decreased.

The genre we decided to bass our film opening on was that of an action thriller. The only real prop that we used was a chocolate bar and this comes back to the name of the film ‘Le chocolate’. Also with the French twist to the name we decided to add French style music.

Within the task we were asked to try and include a wide range of camera angles. The first one that was asked for us was shot reverse shot this is when one character is shown looking at another character (often off-screen), and then the other character is shown looking back at the first character. Since the characters are shown facing in opposite directions, the viewer assumes that they are looking at each other. In our clip this method was kind of used when the victim of the robbery looked back to see who had taken her bar. The jobber was originally shown looking back but we felt it would be in more of a rhythm if he didn’t look back but just carry on travelling down the stars trying to make a swift get away. The second type of camera shot originally set out was the 180 degree rule this is a basic guideline in film making that states that two characters in the same scene should always have the same left/right relationship to each other. If the camera passes over the imaginary line connecting the two subjects, it is called crossing the line. Whilst making the film we didn’t us the 180 degree rule this is due to the fact that no dialogue was used so it would have been very hard to find an opportunity to fit it in, secondly the two subjects are not in the same scene together this means we would have been unable to carry out the rule. The third thing that was asked was camera angles this is very important whilst making a film production. Within la chocolate we used a range of angles for example a high angle tilt, a medium close up and point of view. We used the point of view angle when the victim through the shoe at the robber we chose this view as we felt it would be the best way to show the exact point when the shoe hit the robber and therefore making him hit the ground this meaning the victim was able to collect her recently stolen property.

Our film hits represents a number of social groups. The first group we represented was gender, this is done by choosing the sex of the actors to play the roles. This is as you stereotypically think of a robber to be a male and the victim of a robbery a female. I feel that it was very hard to represent age as we filmed our film opening in school and in school hours and this made it very hard for us to us a wide range of ages.
The media institution which may distribute our media production would be rain dance. I feel this is a good chose as it is a company which is made by film makers for film makers this is good as because the founders are film makers they know really what they would want out of a film production company. Secondly rain dance hold an annual film festival where people from all other the world come to view the films, short films or opening seeing if it is worth them buying in to the idea.
The target audience for my production would be those into either spoof or action. The sex of these could be both male and female but the age range would usually be around the late teens, twenties, thirties and forties.
The way I could attract my target market/audience through advertising, the ways I could advertise would be important as if I aim it at the wrong target market then there is no point at advertising. But if it is aimed at the correct audience then it will able me to pull on the people who would be interested in the genre of my film.
After finishing my media production I have picked up a number of key skills. I have learnt how to confidently work with the Apple Macs and how to carry out editing to a reasonable level.
